Who we are

HikeID.com is a companion project from Live Outside (liveoutside.com), an independent camping and hiking gear site online since 2001. This page explains what HikeID collects, which is very little, and what you can do about it. It is written in plain language on purpose.

What we collect

The quiz. Your six answers are scored in your browser. They are not sent to us, stored on a server, or tied to you in any way. If you share your result, the link carries only the profile name, never your answers.

Analytics. Google Analytics 4 records anonymous usage: pages viewed, quiz starts and completions, which profile a visitor received, which share button was used, and which gear guide was clicked through to. This tells us whether the quiz is useful. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses, and nothing it records tells us who you are.

Nothing else. HikeID has no accounts, no email list, no comments, and no forms. There is nothing to sign up for.

Cookies

HikeID sets no cookies of its own. Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID) to tell one visitor from another and to remember that a visit is in progress; they expire after two years. You can block them in your browser settings or with an extension without affecting anything on this site.

Third-party services

  • Google Analytics, run by Google, provides the anonymous usage statistics described above. Google's own privacy policy covers what Google does with that data.
  • LiveOutside.com is where the gear guides live. It has its own privacy policy, which applies once you are there.

Affiliate links

The six Hiker ID pages carry gear picks. Amazon picks use HikeID's own Amazon Associates links and pass through a small redirect page on this site (go.html) that opens the Amazon app when you have it installed; it stores nothing and sets no cookie. The canvas tent pick uses LiveOutside.com's Stout Tent affiliate link. Those links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Quiz results and picks are never influenced by which products pay more.

Your choices

Block analytics cookies in your browser, or install Google's opt-out browser add-on, if you prefer not to be counted. The quiz works exactly the same either way.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it.

Questions about privacy go through the contact section on the Live Outside about page, which reaches the same people who run HikeID.
