What kind of hiker are you?
HikeID is a 60-second quiz that reads how you actually hike, then issues your Hiker ID: one of six trail personalities, each with a gear shortlist built for it rather than for the average of everyone.
No account, no email. Six questions, about a minute.
- Pack weight
- Camp comfort
- Vert appetite
The quiz
Six questions. Then your Hiker ID.
About a minute. Answer for the hiking you actually do, not the hiking you plan to do, and the card will fit.
Question 1 of 6
Your Hiker ID
The six Hiker IDs
Every hiker is one of these. Mostly.
Six profiles, built from how people actually sleep, carry, and move outdoors. Each one maps to a gear shortlist on LiveOutside, so the recommendation fits the hiker in front of it, not the average of every hiker.
-
The Tree Sleeper
Hammock camper
Two good trees are a campsite. You sleep suspended, carry a tarp instead of a footprint, and hold firm opinions about underquilts.
Gear focusCamping hammocks, underquilts, tarps
-
The Gram Counter
Ultralight backpacker
You know your base weight to the ounce and have cut the handle off something. Long miles, small pack, no apologies.
-
The Dawn Patrol
Day hiker and trail runner
Out at first light, back for lunch, and the shoes matter more than anything else you own. Trips get measured in vert, not nights.
Gear focusTrail runners, daypacks, hydration
-
The Scrambler
Mountaineer and approach hiker
The trail is the part before the fun starts. Sticky rubber on your feet, a helmet in the pack, and a summit you can name from the car.
Gear focusApproach shoes, boots, technical packs
-
The Rain-or-Shine
All-weather layers seeker
The forecast is a suggestion. You go anyway, and your layering system is the most engineered thing you own.
Gear focusRain shells, base layers, mid layers
-
The Base Camper
Car camper and basecamp host
Big tent, real pillow, and a camp kitchen that would embarrass some apartments. You hike out from a comfortable camp and make sure everyone eats well.
Gear focusTents, camp kitchen, sleeping comfort

Questions, answered
What is HikeID?
HikeID is a free 60-second quiz that identifies your hiker profile, one of six Hiker IDs, and then points you to gear picked for that profile on LiveOutside.com. It comes from the same people who have run Live Outside's independent gear guides since 2001.
How does the quiz decide my Hiker ID?
Each answer adds points to one or more of the six profiles. The profile with the most points is your Hiker ID, and if a second profile scores close behind, your card notes it as a streak. The scoring runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
What are the six Hiker IDs?
The Tree Sleeper, The Gram Counter, The Dawn Patrol, The Scrambler, The Rain-or-Shine, and The Base Camper. Each one describes how a hiker sleeps, carries, and moves outdoors, and each one maps to a different gear shortlist.
Can I retake it?
As often as you like. Answer for the hiking you actually do and the result settles down. Answer for the hiking you wish you did and you get a different card, which is its own kind of honest.
Does HikeID sell gear?
No. HikeID recommends gear and links to guides on LiveOutside.com, which may earn a commission on some links at no extra cost to you. Your quiz result never changes based on what pays more.
